History of the Balinese Kecak Dance

Kecak Dance Melasti

The Balinese Kecak Dance was created by a Balinese dancer named I Wayan Limbak who collaborated with Walter Spies, a painter from Germany. They started creating this dance in 1930. These people have discovered their interest in Balinese spiritual dance. The first time they saw the Sanghyang dance, a dance that can make the dancer possessed by a holy spirit so that the dancer falls into a trance. The dancer doesn’t remember anything at the moment. The dancer is possessed by the holy spirit which is included in this sacred dance.

There are two types of Sanghyang dance, the first is the Sanghyang Dedari dance and the second is the Sanghyang Jaran dance. The Sanghyang Dedari dance is performed by two pure girls and the Sanghyang Jaran dance is performed by two boys riding artificial horses. This dance is a ritual dance where fire is the essence of this dance.

How the Kecak Dance is performed

Kecak Dance Melasti

I Wayan Limbak and Walter Spies have implemented this sacred dance into the Balinese Kecak dance. The story of this dance is based on the Ramayana epic, especially the scene of Rama fighting Ravana, the giant who kidnapped Sita, Rama’s wife. The Ramayana dancers are surrounded by around fifty to one hundred and fifty people. The people around him will shout ‘cak’ as a chant, which means they are in a trance along with the chant. While shouting cak, they raised their hands and closed their eyes. At this time, the dancers were also in a trance. They are possessed by Rama’s warrior, the Holy Monkey.

Dancer Costume

Furthermore, the clothes worn by the dance accompanists are sarongs and black and white squares wrapped around the waist. Apart from that, the majority of Kecak dance accompanists are men who do not wear clothes to cover their bodies above the waist.

Meanwhile, the main Kecak Dance dancers will wear colorful costumes. As well as crown decorations on their heads, according to the characters played in the dance drama.

Dance Movement

To accompany the Kecak Dance, they will dance with up and down hand movements and while moving their feet. Apart from moving their hands and feet, the accompanying dancers also sing songs with the sound “cak cak cak”.

The combination of sounds, Cak, Cak, Cak, sounds rhythmically beautiful even without musical instruments, just like acapella music. There will be one dance accompanist who will give voice cues to the other dance accompanists. Sometimes for low sound and high sound signals.

Apart from that, several accompanying dancers also intersperse with typical Balinese songs which are sung in chorus while dancing. On average, the songs played to accompany the dance are songs from the Sanghyang dance.

Meanwhile, the movements of the main dancer who plays the dance drama are much more complex according to the character the dancer plays. There are dancers who play the characters Hanuman, Ravana, Rama and Dewi Sita.
