Uluwatu History Glimpse
Along with the history of its existence, there are 2 opinions regarding the history of the founding of Luwur Uluwatu Temple.
First, there are those who think that this temple was founded by Empu Kuturan. He was one of the Panca Pandita who arrived in Bali in the year 923 during the reign of Marakata.
Another opinion is that the construction of the Uluwatu Luhur Temple occurred during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong by Dang Hyang Nirartha. Dang Hyang Nirartha was a pedanda/priest who came from the Kingdom of Daha (Kediri) in East Java. Came to Bali in 1546 AD.
Dang Hyang Nirartha after taking a spiritual journey around the island of Bali. It ended just south of Pecatu Hill and built what we know as Pura Luhur Uluwatu today. It was at this location that he moksa (ascended with his soul and body) leaving ‘marcapada’ (world) to ‘swargaloka’ (heaven).

Kecak dance
At Uluwatu Temple there is also the Kecak dance as one of the most charming dance performances. The Kecak Dance also has another name, namely the ‘Fire Dance’, which is also one of the most famous performances on the island of Bali.
Uluwatu Kecak dance. This dance displays an artistic story from an episode of the epic story Ramayana. Which involves Hanoman and the main characters, namely Rama, Sita and Ravana. What makes the Kecak dance unique is that the only musical accompaniment to the Ramayana story is the male dancer’s song which sounds like ‘keh-chak’.
The best place to watch this dance is the open-air theater next to Pura Luhur Uluwatu. This show starts at 18:00 to 19:30. while looking at the beautiful sunset.
